E. L. Smiling III grew up in Stafford, Virginia and comes from a large family of collegiate athletes. With five sisters and a brother, there was never a dull moment. His father is a Pastor of a small Baptist church in Goldvein, Virginia called Cleversoak Baptist Church. Growing up he was always involved in church, even being one of the musicians at one point. He also developed a love for athletics early in high school and chose to play wide receiver for the Hokies. During his tenure at Virginia Tech he realized what an impact the chaplain position was on his life and how important it is, during that period of life, to build a foundation in Christ. He has dedicated himself to the encouraging, empowering and equipping of athletes and coaches on the Virginia Tech campus and continues to press toward the mark of the high calling in Jesus Christ.
